쌀씻기(Rice scouring)

홈이 파져있는 큰 돌위에 잘돌이 섞인 쌀을 넣고 씻는다. 물을 길어왔으니 이제 식사준비를 할 차례.

농가 안뜰에서의 점심식사, 가장과 장남이 먼저 식사를 끝낸 후 부인과 아이들이 그 상을 물려받던 시절이었다.

씨아로 면화씨를 뺀 후 물레로 실을 자았다.

* 길쌈이란?(What is Gil-ssam?) *

목화의 솜을 따서 물레로 만든 실이 무명실로써 이것으로 베를 짜는 일을 길쌈이라 한다. 이것은 여성 전담의 일거리였으며 그것의 노동력이 높이 평가되어 베값을 제법 잘 쳐서 받을 수 있었다. 그래서 길쌈에 능숙한 여자가 무명 길쌈으로 집안을 일으켰다거나 부모 및 남편의 약값을 댔다는 얘기가 흔했고 여인들이 길쌈을 하면서 힘든 시름과 무료함을 달래기 위한 '길쌈노래(베틀가)' 를 부르곤 했다. 이러한 길쌈노래는 그 당시의 희로애락을 담고 있는 것으로 우리의 내방문학의 중요한 한 부분이라 할 수 있겠다.

(Weaving is called 'Gil-ssam'. This was a job exclusively for women, and its labor force was highly valued, so it was able to earn a fair wage. So, it was common to say that a woman who was good at weaving started a house with cotton weaving, or that she paid for her parents and husband's medicines. This weaving song contains the joys and sorrows of that time, and it can be said that it is an important part of our visiting literature.)
